Find your calculator

Pick your model to jump to its guide. Each guide follows the same order, starting with exam mode.

HP Prime. Rare in IB classes. It is listed for IB exams only in a specific HP exam-mode configuration with CAS and other features blocked; the configuration file comes from HP. Because it has CAS, it does not meet the Cambridge or Pearson rules outside an exam mode. Check with your coordinator before buying one.

Which calculator for which exam

A summary of the published calculator rules for the courses on this site, written in plain words. The exam boards and the manufacturers say which models qualify; schools add their own checks.

CourseCalculator ruleWhat to bring
IB Maths: Analysis & ApproachesPaper 1: no calculator. Papers 2 and 3: a graphic display calculator (GDC) in its IB exam mode.GDC
IB Maths: Applications & InterpretationA GDC is used on every paper, in its IB exam mode.GDC
IB Physics (exams from 2025)A calculator is allowed on Paper 1 (1A and 1B) and Paper 2. Most students use their Maths GDC in IB exam mode.GDC or scientific
Cambridge IGCSE Maths 0580 / 0980Papers 1 and 2: no calculator. Papers 3 and 4: scientific calculator. Graphic display and symbolic algebra are not allowed unless a syllabus says so.Scientific
Cambridge IGCSE Physics 0625Scientific calculator. Same Cambridge rules: no graphic display, no symbolic algebra.Scientific
Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Maths A (4MA1)A calculator on all papers. Prohibited: databanks, stored text or formulae, QWERTY keyboards, symbolic algebra or calculus.Scientific (a compliant GDC in exam mode is allowed)
Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Physics (4PH1)A calculator is expected. The same Pearson prohibitions apply.Scientific

Cambridge does not publish a model list: any calculator without the prohibited features is allowed. Pearson accepts a graphic calculator only if it meets its rules, which in practice means exam mode switched on and shown to the invigilator. For IB exams, your IB coordinator holds the current calculator guidance for each session.

Habits that protect marks on any calculator

  • Common errorWrong angle mode. A trig answer that looks odd is usually a degrees/radians mix-up. In IB Maths, calculus with trig functions needs radians. Check the status bar before every paper.
  • Common errorCalculator answer, no method. On a calculator paper, a bare final answer that is wrong earns nothing. Write the equation you solved or the function you integrated, then the answer.
  • Exam tipKeep full accuracy. Store intermediate results in memory and round only the final answer. Rounding at each step changes the third significant figure.
  • Exam tipThree significant figures. Give exact answers or answers to 3 s.f. unless the question asks otherwise. Set the display to Sci 3 only if you remember to read the unrounded value too.
  • Common errorPopulation or sample SD. σx and sx differ. Read the question to see which one it wants.
  • Exam tipPractise in exam mode. Exam mode clears or hides saved programs and some apps. Do at least one full mock with it switched on.
  • Exam tipFresh batteries. Replace batteries before the exam season. Exam modes keep the backlight on and drain batteries faster.
  • Common errorStandard form typed by hand. Use the ×10ˣ (EE) key. Typing ×10^ by hand causes order-of-operations mistakes when you divide.

Know the keys. Now earn the method marks.

A calculator gets the number. One-to-one lessons in IB and IGCSE Physics and Maths show you how to write the working around it, so a correct answer earns every mark it should.
